Southern Cook in Training board

I thought it would be fun to share some of my favourite family recipes (some old and some new) with you. I’ve always enjoyed cooking and started spending more time in the kitchen after getting married and settling down in the UK. I’ll admit I’m still ‘in training’ as the picture above suggests! I was frying okra (recipe to follow) when I scorched my sign which was a gift from my dad several years ago. And yes you can only imagine how happy this southern girl was when I found frozen okra in the UK!

The first year proved to be a little tough as most of my recipes were southern and there were several ingredients I couldn’t easily find in the UK so I needed to spend time finding substitutes! I often laugh about my first trips to the grocery stores looking for cilantro, powdered sugar, zucchini, eggplant, jello, and many other ingredients. I quickly learned the British words such as coriander (cilantro), icing sugar (powdered sugar), courgette (zucchini), aubergine (eggplant) jelly (jello) and so on!

The grocery store took some getting used to as I had to remember my £1 coin for the shopping cart and be ready to bag my own groceries! And the pressure with so many groceries to bag because I still shopped like an American (thinking I needed to stock my cabinets for the next month) and the next customer patiently waiting for me to get out of the way! I’ve now adjusted and we tend to do a weekly shop along with a monthly online delivery for the essentials! I also had to start converting Fahrenheit to Celsius and am now an avid believer in my digital kitchen scale.

I’m certain Sweet Sally Tea will pair well with the recipes I share here! And I look forward to your comments and finding out which are your favourites!
