Tomato Gravy – A Southern Specialty

February 9, 2015

After all of these years, I finally learned how to make tomato gravy & biscuits! This recipe will serve about 2 people so if you have a large crowd coming you’ll want to increase the measurements for the ingredients. We often had biscuits and tomato gravy at my great-grandparents and grandparents back in Mississippi. Good old southern tomato gravy reminds me of my family!

Tomato Gravy

Ingredients: 3 tbsp. vegetable oil, 3 heaping tbsp. all purpose (plain) flour, 1 cup water, 1/2 can chopped tomatoes (approx. 200g)

Heat oil in a large skillet (use an iron skillet if you have one) over medium heat, add flour and stir until the flour has browned. Add 1 cup of water, stir and then add the chopped tomatoes. Depending on the consistency you may need to add a touch more water. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until the gravy is heated through. Season with pepper.
Enjoy and let me know what you think! There are lots of ways to make tomato gravy so I’d love to hear if you have a favourite recipe. Check in next week for my easy drop biscuits!
